Gold stabilizes near $4,000 an ounce as the market awaits the Federal Reserve decision; the $3,886 level is under close observation.

Gold prices held steady near $4,000 an ounce on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, as investors awaited the US Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision. The precious metal is facing pressure from inflation concerns and the prospect of continued tight monetary policy. According to a Bloomberg report, spot gold fell 0.2% to $4,007.66 an ounce, while December gold futures were trading at around $4,009.60, down 0.71% at the time of the report.

This comes after gold rose by about 0.5% during the previous session, while the precious metal remained close to its lowest levels since mid-July, after being hit by a strong sell-off last week.

The Federal Reserve and inflation determine the direction of gold.

Investors are focused on the Federal Reserve meeting scheduled for October 27 and 28, with widespread expectations that interest rates will remain unchanged. According to market estimates cited by Bloomberg, the probability of a rate hike at the October meeting has fallen to around 10%, although expectations of monetary policy tightening before the end of the year persist due to inflation concerns.

High interest rates put pressure on gold because it does not generate a periodic return, making bonds and interest-bearing assets relatively more attractive when returns rise.

Continued increases in energy prices could also lead to higher transportation and production costs, exacerbating inflationary pressures and limiting the Federal Reserve’s ability to ease its monetary policy.

Concerns about the continued decline in gold prices

In addition to monetary factors, gold came under pressure from the sell-off in AI-related technology stocks, as some investors sold other assets, including gold, to offset losses in the stock market. Suki Cooper, global head of commodities research at Standard Chartered Bank, said gold needs to establish a stable price base, given the ongoing risks of inflation and the potential for tighter monetary policy.

Cooper warned that prices are going through a technically sensitive phase, noting that the $3,886 per ounce level represents important support, and that gold’s failure to maintain clear technical support could lead to a rapid decline in prices.

Oil and the dollar add further pressure

Meanwhile, oil prices fell for a second day as diplomatic efforts to avert further escalation in the standoff between the United States and Iran intensified. The decline in oil prices could help alleviate inflation concerns, which might provide some support for gold if it reduces expectations of an interest rate hike. However, the Bloomberg Dollar Index edged higher during trading, putting additional pressure on gold given the precious metal’s often inverse relationship with the US dollar.

What are the expectations for gold in the coming period?

The most important area currently being watched by investors is the $3,886 per ounce level, considered a crucial technical support level by Standard Chartered. Holding this level could help gold establish a price base and attempt a recovery, while a break below it could increase selling pressure. On the upside, reclaiming and holding above $4,000 could provide some stability to the market, but the continuation of the recovery will remain contingent on developments in the dollar, bond yields, and Federal Reserve statements.

Gold thus stands at a delicate juncture, converging with monetary policy pressures, inflation risks, and financial market volatility. The Federal Reserve’s decision, along with any signals regarding interest rates in December, will be the most crucial factor in determining whether the precious metal will stabilize and regain upward momentum, or face a new wave of decline.
