Market Volatility Explained: Key Economic Forces Shaping Global Finance
Global markets opened today amid anticipation, with central bank interest rate decisions looming and concerns about inflation and the Middle East conflict persisting. Investors are focused on the movements of the US dollar, a key factor influencing the direction of numerous assets, from major currencies to gold, stocks, and oil.

The main idea currently driving markets is the outlook for US monetary policy. Persistent high inflation could prompt the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates elevated for longer, which would support the dollar and put pressure on gold and some other currency pairs. Conversely, any less hawkish signals from the Fed could reverse these movements.

First: Euro vs. Dollar (EUR/USD)
The euro is under pressure against the dollar due to concerns about economic growth in the Eurozone and rising energy costs, coinciding with anticipation of the US Federal Reserve’s decision. The pair was trading near the 1.1179 level, based on the reference price published on October 26. Technical analysis indicates that the 1.1175–1.1190 area represents significant support, while the first resistance lies between 1.1220 and 1.1270. If the support is broken and the price holds below it, the pair could move towards 1.1100–1.1117. Conversely, a bounce above 1.1220 could open the way for an attempt to rise towards 1.1270.

The short-term outlook remains bearish as long as the pair fails to reclaim resistance levels. However, selling near support could carry significant risks, especially if the Fed’s statements prove less hawkish than market expectations.

Second: Dollar vs. Japanese Yen (USD/JPY)
The dollar/yen is moving under the influence of two opposing factors: expectations of continued US interest rate hikes and the possibility of Japanese monetary policy tightening or intervention by Japanese authorities to curb yen weakness. Based on the reference rate published on October 26, the pair traded near 157.46 yen/dollar. The 157.50–157.70 area stands out as a near-term resistance, followed by the 158.00–158.50 range, while the first support lies between 156.15 and 156.40, and then the 155.00–155.50 area.

If the pair manages to break through 157.70 and hold above it, it may target the 158.00–158.50 levels. However, a break below 156.15 could strengthen the likelihood of a decline towards 155.50.
Key factors to watch include US Treasury yields, Bank of Japan statements, and any official signals regarding intervention in the currency market. A significant rise in the pair could increase the risk of Japanese intervention, potentially leading to sharp price movements in the opposite direction.

Third: British Pound versus US Dollar (GBP/USD)
The British pound is under pressure due to the strength of the dollar, but it could benefit from any weakening of the US currency or an improvement in risk appetite. The pair was trading near 1.3380 according to a technical report published on October 26.

The first resistance lies between 1.3385 and 1.3400, while the 1.3285–1.3300 range stands out as the first support zone. Should the decline continue and the support break, the pair could head towards 1.3239, then the 1.3194 level, which represents significant support on the weekly timeframe. A break above 1.3400 and a sustained move above it could support an attempt to rise towards 1.3500.
The technical outlook remains bearish as long as the pair moves below the main resistance zone, but it is important to wait for confirmation of price action rather than entering a sell trade just because it is approaching resistance.

Fourth: US Dollar vs. Canadian Dollar (USD/CAD)
This pair is highly sensitive to oil prices, as well as decisions by the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Canada. A rise in oil prices could support the Canadian dollar, given Canada’s status as an energy exporter, potentially pushing the USD/CAD pair lower. Conversely, a drop in oil prices or a strengthening US dollar could support the pair’s rise. Based on the reference price published on October 26, the pair traded near 1.4019. The 1.4045–1.4083 area stands out as the first resistance, while nearer support lies around 1.4010, followed by the 1.3942–1.3949 area.

If the pair fails to break above 1.4083, selling pressure could continue towards 1.4010, and then 1.3945 if support is broken. A clear break above 1.4083, however, could open the way towards 1.4140–1.4160.

The Bank of Canada’s decision and statements warrant close attention, as its divergent stance from that of the Federal Reserve could lead to significant movements in the pair. Furthermore, developments in oil prices will remain a key factor in determining its direction.

Fifth: Gold (XAU/USD)
Gold is trading near its lowest level in almost three months, after posting weekly losses of more than 4%, amid growing expectations of continued tight US monetary policy. The spot price was trading near $4,005 an ounce in Asian trading on October 26. The main pressure on gold stems from rising expectations of higher interest rates and bond yields, as gold does not offer a cyclical return, thus reducing its appeal when yield-generating assets become more competitive.

Technically, the first resistance lies in the $4,079–$4,100 range, while the $3,900 level represents a significant support zone. A break below this level could lead gold to target $3,800. Conversely, a return above $4,100 could support a corrective bounce.

Forecasts indicate that the Federal Reserve’s decision and US inflation data will be among the most significant factors influencing gold’s movements in the coming days. While the short-term outlook is bearish, any sudden military escalation could revive demand for the precious metal as a safe haven.

Sixth: Crude oil (WTI and Brent)
Oil markets remain highly sensitive to geopolitical developments in the Middle East, with ongoing concerns about supply security and shipping traffic through vital sea lanes. Conversely, any genuine signs of de-escalation could reduce the geopolitical risk premium that has recently supported prices. For West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude, the $104-$106 per barrel area stands out as a key technical resistance, while the $101-$102 range represents a nearby support zone. A break above $106 and a sustained move above it could extend the rally towards $110. A break below this support level would increase the likelihood of a correction, with further support levels at $93 and $87, according to a published technical analysis.

As for Brent crude, it has moved near the $115-$116 range in recent benchmark reports, continuing to be affected by supply risks in the Gulf and the Red Sea.
The outlook for oil remains volatile, with an upward bias contingent on continued geopolitical risks. However, any tangible diplomatic progress could trigger a sharp price decline, making reliance on technical analysis alone insufficient at present.

Seventh: The Dow Jones Industrial Average (Dow Jones)
The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended the session on October 26 at 52,361.58 points, up about 0.3%, as investors awaited the results of US companies and the Federal Reserve’s decision.
The index faces a clear dilemma: strong corporate results may support stocks, but persistent inflation and rising interest rate expectations could limit gains, especially if US bond yields rise.

From a short-term technical perspective, the published technical indicators point to near resistance in the 52,369–52,414 point range, followed by the 52,442 point area. Near support lies between 52,296 and 52,268 points, and then at 52,223 points.

A break above 52,442 points could support further upward movement, while a break below 52,223 points might indicate weakening momentum and a potential correction. However, these levels are relatively narrow and should be treated as short-term trading levels rather than key long-term support and resistance. Major corporate earnings, AI developments, and interest rate expectations remain the most important factors that will determine the index’s direction this week.

Key economic events to look forward to
The week begins with the US Federal Reserve meeting on October 27 and 28, coinciding with the Bank of Canada meeting, making the US dollar and the Canadian dollar currencies worthy of close monitoring. Investors are also awaiting the release of US inflation data, particularly the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, along with GDP figures, which could alter market expectations regarding the path of interest rates in December.

In parallel, developments in the Middle East war remain a key factor in the movement of oil and gold, while the results of major technology companies may determine the direction of US stocks and the extent to which companies can convert artificial intelligence investments into actual profit growth.

How can the markets be read during today’s session?
The main idea is that the strength of the US dollar remains the most influential common factor across a number of markets. If expectations of monetary tightening persist, the euro and the British pound may remain under pressure, gold may struggle to recover, while the movement of the dollar against the yen and the Canadian dollar will be determined by domestic factors, oil prices, and bond yields.
As for oil, it remains hostage to geopolitical developments, while the Dow Jones needs strong results and reassuring signals regarding interest rates to maintain positive momentum.

In my view, the best approach during this period is to focus on three elements: price reaction at support and resistance levels, the direction of US Treasury yields, and geopolitical developments. Reaching a specific technical level should not be considered a sufficient entry signal on its own; waiting for clear confirmation from price action can help avoid false entry points, especially before central bank decisions.
