US stock futures jump as geopolitical tensions ease; awaiting tech giants& earnings and the Fed& decision.

US stock futures rose sharply at the start of trading on Monday, as investors’ risk appetite improved following a de-escalation of tensions between the United States and Iran. Markets are now gearing up for a busy week of events, headlined by earnings reports from major technology companies and the Federal Reserve meeting. Dow Jones futures climbed 0.8% , S&P 500 futures rose nearly 1% , and Nasdaq futures jumped 1.5% , signaling a return to positive momentum after last week’s market declines.

This improvement coincided with a decline in oil prices, with Brent crude falling by about 5% to settle near $91 a barrel . This eased investor concerns about continued inflationary pressures stemming from high energy prices. Lower oil prices are seen as a positive factor for markets, as they help to moderate inflation and give central banks more room to manage monetary policy without the need for further tightening.

European markets also opened higher, while Asian markets performed mixed, with South Korea’s Kospi index rising 0.5% , the Kosdaq index jumping 1.8% , Japan’s Topix index recording limited gains, while the Nikkei 225 index declined slightly.

Technology companies’ results under scrutiny

Investors are turning their attention this week to the earnings reports of the biggest US technology companies, with Apple , Microsoft , Amazon and Meta Platforms all expected to announce their financial results, amid growing questions about whether the massive investments in artificial intelligence can generate returns that justify the high valuations of these companies.

This anticipation comes after Alphabet last week unsettled investors when it raised its capital spending forecast, signaling continued significant investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure. Analysts believe that increased spending could support the companies’ future growth but may also impact profit margins in the short term, making this week’s results crucial for assessing the future of the technology sector.

The effects of the results are also expected to extend to semiconductor companies, cloud computing service providers, and artificial intelligence infrastructure companies, which may see strong moves depending on the spending plans that executive management will reveal.

The Federal Reserve’s decision is in the spotlight.
In addition to corporate earnings, investors are awaiting the U.S. Federal Reserve meeting on Wednesday, which is one of the key economic events of the week.

Market expectations suggest that the US Federal Reserve will keep interest rates unchanged, but CME FedWatch data still reflects a near 30% probability of a surprise 25 basis point hike.

Meanwhile, markets continue to price in the possibility that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates at its September meeting, should inflationary pressures persist or economic data show continued strength in economic activity.

Interest rate decisions are of great importance to financial markets, given their direct impact on borrowing costs, stock valuations, and the performance of growth sectors, especially technology companies.

Markets are looking to regain momentum
US stocks enter this week seeking to recover from recent losses, after the S&P 500 and Nasdaq both recorded their second consecutive week of declines, while the Dow Jones extended its losing streak for a third straight week. Observers believe that the direction of the markets in the coming days will be largely determined by three key factors: geopolitical developments, the earnings reports of major technology companies, and the Federal Reserve’s messages regarding the future of monetary policy, which will shape the trajectory of US stocks in the second half of the year.
